Deidre Richardson: NJ’s Coordinator of Mathematics

She’s the go-to-person for mathematics in New Jersey! The Department of Education’s State Coordinator of Mathematics, Deidre Richardson, supports teachers and leaders across the state by providing guidance on the K-12 New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Mathematics. She’s also in charge of STEM, curriculum development and implementation, program evaluation and local formative assessment through professional learning and technical assistance. She supports Computer Science initiatives.

Prior to joining the NJDOE, Ms. Richardson spent 10 years supporting students and educators as a secondary mathematics teacher and instructional coach.

She studied computer science, holds a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in Mathematics Education from Rutgers University. Her research and professional interests include cognition and early math ideas in preservice teachers, P-16 mathematic education, math teacher preparation, girls in STEM, coding, and innovative interdisciplinary curricula.

State of the Union for New Jersey Mathematics: Standards and Curriculum

Her session will highlight the role and critical work in Mathematics of the NJDOE’s Office of Academics for 2017–2018 and the work of the Advancing Algebra committee, particular standards and mathematical concepts within the New Jersey Learning Standards. She will offer perspectives on coherence and progressions within the NJSLS-M, and frame our focus on program evaluation and critical consumerism. Additionally, she will share any future plans for any NJDOE sponsored math leadership seminars, as well as any resources or professional development opportunities focused on standards, curriculum, and local assessment.
