Elizabeth (Liz) Marquez — Presidential Awardee and So Much More
liz-marquez

A Presidential Awardee and a recipient of the Princeton University Prize for Distinguished Secondary School Teaching, Elizabeth (Liz) Marquez taught mathematics in grades 7-12 and mentored many teachers and teacher interns before becoming a research project manager at Educational Testing Service (ETS).

Liz’s classroom was featured in films on the art of teaching and on standards-based instruction. She presently uses her classroom experience and assessment development experience to lead Challenge IX projects. The projects are:

  • Identifying and Addressing Common Misconceptions That Impede Success of Traditionally Underserved Students in Mathematics and Science
  • Math Learning Challenge—intended to address the needs of traditionally underserved populations

Prior to Challenge IX, Liz developed performance tasks, both formative and summative, as part of the Cognitively Based Assessment of, for, and as Learning (CBAL) research project. Much of Liz’s work at ETS has addressed how the use of performance assessments along with learning progressions can improve classroom teaching and learning so that assessment strengthens instruction rather than displacing it. In addition to assessments, Liz has developed teacher support materials and has delivered workshops using those materials throughout the United States.

Previous work at ETS includes development of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certificates for both middle and high school mathematics teachers.

She has co-authored articles, research papers, and books on teaching, learning, and assessment in mathematics education. She presently co-chairs a committee on performance assessment for the New Jersey Department of Education and serves on the National Selection Committee for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
