Unique Opportunity

Jazz House Kids is a not-for-profit jazz education organization that provides workshops, residencies, concerts, and professional development opportunities to schools throughout New Jersey. Together with our staff, excellent clinicians and educators, volunteers and supportive Board of Directors we have successfully implemented over 100 programs and reached more than 12,000 young people and educators from public schools.

Early next year we are pleased to launch a professional development retreat for public school teachers primarily from Essex County, New Jersey. Thanks in part to a grant received from the Dana Foundation, the professional development retreat we are calling “Jazz Across the Curriculumwill take place February 7-9. We are currently working with the Department of Music Education at William Patterson University to create the curriculum. Our goal is to bring together public school educators from all areas of expertise to learn how to bring jazz into their own classrooms. I have attached our electronic brochure which discusses in greater detail both our organization and the Retreat.

On Thursday, February 7th we will open the retreat with a cocktail party and an all-star jazz concert featuring Christian McBride. On Friday February 8th and Saturday the 9th will be a series of workshops and performances from a great lineup of clinicians that will help bring jazz to this group of educators. We are currently looking for a clinician who would be able to address the use of jazz as a teaching tool in a math classroom and hopefully demonstrate or provide some practical applications that teachers could bring directly back to their own classrooms. If you feel that your organization could help us find this type of clinician we would love to further discuss this project with you. This retreat will include k-12 music teachers and k-8 general teachers but this presenter would only need to present to the k-8 general teachers.

On behalf of Jazz House Kids, I thank you for your time and consideration. I hope to hear from you shortly and we are available any time to answer questions and discuss the possibility of AMTNJ participating as a clinician on either Friday, February 8th or Saturday, February 9th 2008.

We invite you to visit Jazz House Kids on the web at www.jazzhousekids.org.
