DESCRIPTION:Making Meaning of Fractions: Grades 2-6\nPresenter: Cheryl Fricchione \nFractions … just the word tends to cause strong reactions from students and teachers alike. They can be notoriously difficult to both learn and teach but are also crucial to students’ work with proportional reasoning that begins in 6th grade. We often teach fractions as referencing part of a whole\, but did you know that there are actually five different interpretations of fractions? Yes\, the part-whole interpretation of fractions is considered fundamental for developing an understanding of fraction concepts. However\, research has shown that when students rely on this one interpretation their ability to generalize and to work with fraction concepts is limited. Therefore\, addressing the other interpretations is important to develop a deep understanding of fractions. In this workshop\, we will make meaning of all five interpretations of fractions.

SUMMARY:Elementary Math Labs with Allison Gimeli and Charlene DiDonato
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive workshop\, you will learn how to transform an upper elementary classroom into an inquisitive math lab where students are active participants in every step of the learning process.You will experience the math lab firsthand\, engaging with tasks as students would\, to better understand the impact on learning. Drawing on strategies from BuildingThinking Classrooms and insights from past AMTNJ conferences\, we will share our journey of creating a 4th-grade math environment where students feel safe to explore\, solve problems creatively\, and challenge their own thinking. While secondary classrooms are embracing these transformations\, fewer elementary classrooms have made the shift—this workshop aims to bridge that gap and inspire new approaches. \nThe cost of each One-Day Workshop is $149 for members. Non-members must pay $179 for their first workshop; the additional cost covers membership for a year.
