SUMMARY:Multiplication Strategies for Grades 3 and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Multiplication Strategies for Grades 3 and Beyond \nPresenter: Kelly Frazee\, Ed.D. K-4 Math Interventionist\, North Brunswick Township Schools \nDate: April 25\, 2024 \nTime: 9am – 3pm \nIn this workshop we will dive into multiplication strategies for grades 3 and beyond. There has been much debate in the field for the past decade or so about how to teach basic multiplication and support students’ fact fluency. We will discuss what fluency really means\, learn the importance of teaching strategies for multiplication instead of tricks or memorization\, and explore the power of manipulatives\, conceptual modeling\, and instructional scaffolding in building our students’ multiplication competency.

SUMMARY:Elementary Math Series: D.I.Y Games on The Fly! K-5
DESCRIPTION:Creating Inclusive Elementary Math Spaces K-5 \nPresenter: Melissa Pearson\, Ed.D. and Susan Totaro \nThis session will explore with participants how we create spaces for students to see themselves as doers\, knowers\, and sense-makers of mathematics. We will identify structures\, practices\, routines\, and activities that foster learning environments that hone students’ mathematical identities and foster agency. Teachers and leaders will leave the session with ideas and resources to bring back to their classrooms and schools.

SUMMARY:Elementary Math Series: D.I.Y Games on The Fly! K-5
DESCRIPTION:D.I.Y Games on The Fly! K-5 \nPresenter: Kristine Venneman \nLearn how to differentiate your favorite games and create brand new ones tailored to the kids you have in front of you today. Using a variety of blank game templates\, dice and cards\, we will create simple yet sophisticated games that engage multiple grade levels. Consider how to increase or decrease competition in any game and learn how to add reasoning & strategy to ‘flat” games. Attendees will leave with printable and digital games.

SUMMARY:Elementary Math Series: Making Meaning of Fractions: Grades 2-6
DESCRIPTION:Making Meaning of Fractions: Grades 2-6\nPresenter: Cheryl Fricchione \nFractions … just the word tends to cause strong reactions from students and teachers alike. They can be notoriously difficult to both learn and teach but are also crucial to students’ work with proportional reasoning that begins in 6th grade. We often teach fractions as referencing part of a whole\, but did you know that there are actually five different interpretations of fractions? Yes\, the part-whole interpretation of fractions is considered fundamental for developing an understanding of fraction concepts. However\, research has shown that when students rely on this one interpretation their ability to generalize and to work with fraction concepts is limited. Therefore\, addressing the other interpretations is important to develop a deep understanding of fractions. In this workshop\, we will make meaning of all five interpretations of fractions.
